작가 소개

■ 작가 노트 / 유부강

귀향으로도 풀리지 않은, 근원을 향한 노스탤지어

장거리 비행의 피로가 몰려와 잠시 눈을 감는다. 40여년 미국에 살고 있는 한국인으로서, 고국에 갔다가 다시 미국으로 돌아오는 비행기에 몸을 실으면 나의 귀소본능은 길을 잃는다. 어디로 가는 게 나의 집으로 가는 길이고, 어디로 가는 게 집을 떠나는 길인가. 길을 떠날 때마다 한 모금의 노스탤지어를 삼키며 집 아닌 집으로 돌아간다.

아기자기한 한국의 산하가 내려다보인다. 태어난 곳을 벗어나 삶의 터전으로 돌아가는 길은 내겐 시간여행이다. 나를 만들어준 핏줄과 혈육의 안온함이 있는 땅을 벗어나며, 나는 어느새 반평생 이상을 살아온 신시내티의 내 거처를 그리워하고 있다. 고국을 떠나 내가 뿌리내린 곳, 화폭 앞에 홀로 서서 땀과 눈물을 뿌려온 곳, 내가 사랑하는 인연들이 서로 뿌리를 엉키고 있는 곳.

어느 곳이 과연 나의 과거이고, 현재이며, 미래인가.

나의 과거이자 또 하나의 미래인 고국과 또 한 번의 이별을 감내하는 사이, 비행기는 어느새 나의 현재라는 시간의 활주로를 달리고 있다. 갑자기 빛의 발자국들이 찬란하게 흩어져 있는 풍경이 눈에 들어온다. 시간여행의 피로감 속에서 흐릿해진 시야가 환하게 밝아진다. 거침없는 붓 터치로 자유분방하게 그려진 대지라는 화폭이 광활하게 펼쳐진다. 저 대지 위에는 고국도, 이주지도, 원주민도, 이방인도, 이민자, 귀향자도 없다. 오로지 드넓은 하늘과 땅과 인간이 있을 뿐.

한국과 미국을 오가며 아시아와 미주 두 대륙은 자연과 풍광의 차이 이상으로 문화와 의식이 다름을 자연스럽게 몸으로 느껴왔다.

내가 느낀 쌍방향의 노스탤지어와 혼란스러운 시간여행을 화폭에 옮기면서, 동양과 서양은 자연과 문화만 다른 게 아니라 빛에 대한 인식도 다르다는 것을 깨달았다. 서양의 인본주의와 동양의 자연주의가 표현하는 빛의 다름을 몸으로 경험하며 마음으로 느끼며 살아온 덕이다.

인본주의의 눈으로 사물을 보면, 사람의 눈에 비친 형상이 들어온다. 그 빛은 사람의 수정체를 투과한 빛이다. 서양의 위대한 거장들이 수천 년 동안 그 빛을 그려내고 잡아왔다.

자연주의의 눈으로 사물을 보면, 감히 함부로 빛을 다 그려낼 수 없다. 인간이 자연을 다 잡아낼 수는 없기 때문이다. 어느 한 구석을 비워두지 않을 수 없다.

그럼에도 동양과 서양이 갈라져 만나지 못하는 것은 아니다. 이 동서양의 가름을 뛰어넘은 곳에 어떤 빛이 있을까, 나 스스로 물어보았다.

자연(自然), 네이처(Nature).

인본주의의 시각에서 인간의 눈에 비친 모든 것을 그려 넣어도 자연의 빛을 다 잡아낼 수는 없다. 자연주의의 시각에서 아무리 넉넉한 여백을 남기더라도 자연의 빛을 다 잡아낼 수 없다.

자연 곧 네이처는 우리가 나온 자궁이자 우리가 들어갈 무덤이다. 동서양의 가름도 이 자궁과 무덤을 벗어나지는 못한다.

어떤 위대한 사실주의와 어떤 위대한 표현주의도 자연이라는 빛의 일부에 지나지 않는다. 인간이 그려낸 모든 빛의 속살에는 자연이 숨어 있다. 우리는 거기에 동양의 빛 혹은 서양의 빛을 입힐 따름이다. 동서양의 빛이 아무리 서로 다르게 빛나더라도 그 안에는 오로지 하나의 자연이 숨 쉬고 있다.

그리운 거처와 몽매에도 잊을 수 없는 고국을 오가며, 나의 노스탤지어는 어떤 방향의 귀로에서도 달래지지 않았다. 나의 노스탤지어는 어쩌면 나의 자궁이자 무덤인 자연을 향한 것일지도 모른다. 그리하여 나는, 자연이라는 속살 위에 동양의 빛과 서양의 빛을 겹겹이 입혀, 그것을 담대하게 표현해내는 긴 여정을 멈추지 않을 것이다.
